150th Anniversary

The Club celebrated its 150th anniversary during the 2009 season with a 'cricket week' in August. Following a two-day Lancashire U19sgame against Middlesex, S&B beat a strong MCC side skippered by former Club captain Jamie Butler. This match was followed by the 150th Anniversary Dinner, held in the Clubhouse. Speakers at the Dinner were Ian Lovett, Chairman of Middlesex CCC, His Honour Judge Stuart Fish, another former Club captain and Rex Purnell, Chorley CC and Gibraltar. Club historian Mike Braham (see below) MC'd the evening in fine style.

The remaining two matches featured Preston, our first ever opponents, with honour duly done in a reversal of that original defeat and finishing up with a hugely enjoyable T20 match against S&B Old Boys, featuring the likes of John Parker, Geoff Thornton and Phil Whelan.

To commemorate its anniversary the Club also published a concise history. Compiled and edited by local solicitor Michael Braham and titled 'Fifteen Decades of Cricket at Southport & Birkdale Cricket Club', it chronicles the history of the Club from its very first match, against Preston in 1859, to the present day. Written as a series of essays, rather than a chronological history, the book draws heavily upon and brings up to date the work of former Club secretary Ken Porter, whose 'A hundred years of cricket at Trafalgar Road' was published in 1974 to commemorate the Centenary of the Club's Lancashire out ground in Birkdale.

With contributions from numerous former players and featuring many previously unpublished photos and illustrations, Michael Braham's history will be of interest to local historians, as well as to cricket lovers throughout the area. Copies of this limited edition publication are available only from Michael Braham (mikebraham@brighouses.co.uk), who is also planning an exhibition of Club memorabilia.

A limited edition 100% pure silk tie was also commissioned to commemorate the anniversary and there are still a few available, price £10, from behind the club bar.
