Southport & Birkdale Cricket Club has a proud history of staging First Class cricket, with some of the games' greatest names treading the Trafalgar Road turf between 1959 and 1999 - Viv Richards, Wasim Akram, Barry Richards, Muttiah Muralitheran and 'Freddy' Flintoff, to name but a few. However, a dozen years elapsed before Lancashire returned, in 2011, to take on Nottinghamshire, with record crowds enjoying the July sun during the Red Rose County's Championship Summer.
The success of this match saw Lancashire return in 2013 (against5 Hampshire) and 2015 (Derbyshire), leading to the award of a unique 3 year staging agreement to bring County Championship cricket to the Club until 2018.
The most recent match, in July 2016, brought Durham to Trafalgar Road for the first time and what a game it was, with all four possible results still on the cards going in to tea on Day 4. In the event, the visitors triumphed by 2 wickets, but cricket was the winner as the Durham team engaged some of the local juniors in an impromptu game on the outfield and later led some of S&B’s members in a spirited session of old fashioned community singing.
This match attracted a good deal of favourable publicity and some of these reports can be accessed online, please see below:
