The Hockey Section held their annual tournament on Saturday 8th September. The tournament should have been for both the Ladies and the Men's sections but the Ladies tournament was cancelled when all four invited teams withdrew in the last week or so before the tournament with the last three pulling out days beforehand. The Ladies did manage to play a friendly against a strong Pendle side and after a shaky start, going 3 down in the first 20 minutes did not concede again for the remainder of the game and put up an admirable performance. The team welcomed Tash Rashid-Gardner and Haley Hinton to their ranks, both making their debuts. There were strong performances from captain Rach Utterson, Elle Massam, Hannah Williams and Player of the Match Katie Howard.
The Men's tournament did proceed with five teams other than the hosts taking part. Southport opened proceedings against the holders West Derby winning 2-0, Ormskirk and Liverpool Sefton playing the second match with Preston and City of Manchester completing the first round of matches. Southport next played Preston and earned a valuable point having gone 2-0 behind, with player coach Connor Jameson then getting both the goals.
Southport then earned another 3 points against Ormskirk and were sadly defeated by City of Manchester before bagging another 3 points against Liverpool Sefton, who have won the trophy more than any other team over the years.
With one match left to play, Southport could win the trophy for second time if Ormskirk could avoid defeat against City of Manchester. This sadly didn't happen with Manchester racking up a 1-0 win a pipping the hosts to the trophy by a single point.
Ormskirk and City of Manchester returned to S&B, along with the Ladies and Men's teams for an enjoyable evening.
