On a night when weather conditions were attrocious the best place to be is watching squash in the comfort of our spectator gallery.
Almost a full house witnessed some superb matches in S & Bs 1st team's clash with top of the table Warrington 1st team. Being in the relegation zone we needed to field our strongest possible team to have a hope of victory. With world ranked Emyr Evans, Women's world ranked 5, Laura Massaro, husband Danny Massaro and our club players Matty Sherman and Arron Ken we had a team capable of giving the visitors a run for their money.
After a slight delay the match started with our number 3, Danny Massaro playing on the show court against Warrington's Rob Taylor. As usual Danny Massaro gave us a master class in technique and court movement which proved to be too much for Rob Taylor with a 3- 0 victory for the S & B player. 11 - 4. 11 - 8. 11 - 7
Meanwhile on Court 2 our number 4, Matty Sherman, was struggling with a stiff neck which severely hampers movement and keeping an eye on the ball. His opponent, Nat Fairhurst, at 16 years old is a rising star on North West Coutires squash scane. Matt will be disappointed at the result with a 0-3 loss. Score 6 - 11. 7 - 11. 0 - 11
The next match on the Show Court was our number one player, Wales ranked 3 Emyr Evans against veteran NWCSL player Andy Whipp. This match was a superb battle of two highly skilled players. Emyr has , in their previous, clashes, been too good for the Warrington number 1 and the pressure told with again with mistakes costing Whippy the match. The result, 3 - 0 to S & B Score 11 - 5. 11 - 9. 11 - 6.
With 3 matches of the five played, there was now a delay as two of the Warrington team were battling the elements over Saddleworth Moor in a 4 .5 hour journey from Leeds.
Arron Ken, whose performances so far this season have been excellent, took on Matt Goodson.
With the score at 2 all the crucial deciding match was between S & B's Lauar Massaro and Adam Taylor. At the start Taylor looked to be too good for the S & B player with a lot of deceptive winners we were soon 2 - 0 down with things not looking good. A few wise words from husband, Danny, seemed to do the trick and Laura battled back to square the match. The fifith and final game would decide who won the fixture and pick up the vital (for S & B) five bonus points. Lauras fitness was to prove the deciding factor, with travel weary Taylor losing the unerring accuracy that had dominated the first two games. It was mistakes under pressure that cost Taylor the match.
S & B winning 3 - 2 Score 9 - 11. 7 - 11. 11 - 5. 11 - 7. 11 - 9
