This weeks home fixture welcomed Tame Valley (where's Tame Valley? Up in the hills between Oldham and Saddleworth Moor) 1st team. They are another team flying high in the NWCSL First division. So another tough fixture for S & B.
The match started with Nathan Liddle playing at 5 against Ray Burke. Nathan was soon 6 -1 down and not looking good but, fighting back, he took the game 11 - 9, much to his opponents annoyance. Game 2 was a tight affair that was crucial to both players. It came to a tie break which was won by the visitor 12 - 10. From there Ray Burke gained in confidence to take the next two games and the match Score 11 - 9 / 10 - 12 / 6 - 11 / 5 - 11
Meanwhile, on court two Danny Massaro was doing battle with junior, Elliot Ridge. The young visitor took the first game 8 - 11. But Danny's years of experience of first division squash were to prove too much for Elliot with Danny fighting back to take the next three games and the match.Score 8 - 11 / 11 - 3 / 11 - 8 / 11 - 1
The next match on the show court saw S & Bs Arron Ken playing the very tricky left hander Amir Manouchehri. Game 1 saw Arron at his best, taking it 11 - 8. But lefty's power on the forehand and a more than decent backhand made life difficult for Arron. The referee for the night, Steve Eccles, made it clear, with frequent "NO LET" calls that the ball must be played if there is room to hit it. The next three hard fought games all went to Manouchehri. Score 11 - 9 / 8 -11 / 6 - 11 / 5 - 11
Last week , our number one for the night, Laura Massaro was doing battle with women's world number one Nour El Shabini on the glass back in Grand Central Station in New York City. Her opponent for this match was (men's world ranked 260) Lewis Doughty. There was little between the two racket skill wise. Lewis took the first game 11 - 5 with Laura taking the second 11 - 9. With many long punishing rallies the next two games went to Tame Valley. Score 5 - 11 / 11 - 9 / 6 - 11 / 8 - 11
The final match of the fixture was Matty Sherman against Chris Morrison, the vastly experienced Valley number 3. For a big man Chris's movement around court is amazing. Matty hits the ball hard and so does Morrison so the rallies were long and fierce. The opening two games both went to Tame Valley 7 - 11 / 9 - 11. The third game was closer with Matty digging in to get to 10 all. But a fourth game was not to be with Chris Morrison taking the tie break. Score 7- 11 / 9 - 11 / 11 - 13
