Squash Home

Southport & Birkdale Squash Club was opened in 1974 as a section of Southport & Birkdale Cricket Club. We have two Squash courts with a viewing gallery overlooking them. In 2006 we invested in the total replacement of the court floors. We have also installed cavity wall insulation and double glazing to improve the court temperature and reduce heating costs.  We now provide excellent facilities for both Squash and Racket Ball.

The Squash Club competes in the North West Counties Squash League (NWCSL).  Although a small club we have, on two occasions in our history, had a team in the 1st division of the league.  In 1992 /3 our first team were runners up to Manchester Northern, qualifying to play in the national league; although we did not put a team in the league due to financial reasons, this was a fantastic achievement for a small club.  We can also boast that S& B 1st taem are the only team ever to beat Manchester Northern 5-0 at their club.  We were again promoted to the first division in 2005, we competed in the league for two seasons. We were relegated from Division 1 at the end on 2006/7.  Playing squash in the NWCSL 1st division is a very expensive business and is only possible if a club can generate substantial financial support. We do not consider it worthwhile, at present, to acheive promotion again.

For the 2011 /2012 season we have entered 3 teams in the NWCSL as we have had a significant influx of players from other clubs in Southport due to S & B being the only establishment in Southport were squash is secure .

Squash team update:  The start of 2011 / 12  season has seen a reasonable amount of success for the three teams entered this year. At the half way point the first team have had a fairly good season, currently in 8th place in a very competitiive league.    The second team are stronger this season and have done really well up to this point, currently in second place, but they could easily top division 3 North West. Promotion is still a distinct possibility.  Meanwhile, the third team have had a fairly reasonable season and are mid- table, they are not strong enought o win this division , but will certainly hold their own.

Other Squash Related News:  At the club AGM a motion was passed which require the management committee to correct the unfairness of costs of playing squash in comparison with the cost of playing tennis at S & B.  ( £155 + £2.50 per game) compared with £170 and no additional charges)  This shoud lead to a more equitable position for the squash playing members.

At the GMC meeting held on Monday 13th June approval was given to two proposals that are very good news for S & B squash players. The selling of squash court light meter keys was accepted and the go ahead was given to purchase and implement the "MYCOURTS" online court booking system.

Online Court Booking System :   Southport & Birkdale Squash club now has the MYCOURTS  online court booking system. Following a very successful test period the new system went live on 25th July 2011.  From 25th July it will not be possible to book a court if you are not  registered  on the MYCOURTS system AND a paid up member of S & B Sports Club.  The court booking system has been an outstanding success.  Feedback from members has been extremely encouraging. The days of having to visit the club to buy a sticker and book a court are now over.

Annual membership of Southport and Birkdale Sports Club costs £155. This fee gives you access to four of the clubs facilities, Squash , Cricket, Hockey and Snooker. For a £15 supplement you can also enjoy the club's tennis facilities.   As of June 2011 there will also be the opportunity for squash and racket ball players to purchase an override key for the squash court light meters available from the bar for £30 +£5 deposit. This will give you the benefit of unlimited squash for just £15.40 per month. It also means that you do not have to visit the bar to obtain light meter tokens; which, in the past, has been not possible if the bar is not open.

If you do not wish to purchase a key the cost of playing squash is £3 for a forty minute session. Courts are now booked online at a cost of  50 pence per court. Court booking credit vouchers are also available from the bar; cost £5 sufficient for 10 court bookings.
